A letter.

Dear Berlin Wall,

I know it's been twenty years since we broke up, but I'm still glad you're gone. I know this sounds harsh and all, but it really wasn't working out. You know? I just felt too controlled when you were around. No hard feelings?

Love, World

Free cello music tonight!

If your life is anything like mine, it is made better by the sound of a cello. And made better still by the sound of THREE cellos playing for your pleasure for FREE.

So this is kind of like tonight at the Press Club (2621 SE Clinton St) at 8:30 when Skip VonKuske and Ashia Grzesik of Vagabond Opera and Emma Wood (all three of Portland Cello Project!) will be playing for a bit.

Pretty neat, yes?

This show will feature solos, duos and trios of cello-y music. This will will inevitably feature some songs in Polish.

(emma wood not pictured)

"You know I'll feel safer? I'll feel safer...when more people in the Muslim world turn out to protest a bombing in the heart of Baghdad that kills hundreds of innocent people than Danish cartoons." - Thomas Friedman, 6, Sept. 2009, Meet The Press

Grow the fuck up.

There was a time when I was highly involved with the Multnomah County GOP. Where it seemed like a good idea to bring some youth and ideas into the mix. But their emails start out with "Conservative Patriots!"

Now, lets address this for a moment.

Making a call to action by strictly addressing a certain political ideology as those who are the only flag bearers of patriotism is not only wrong, but is dangerous. What this insinuates specifically is that those of liberal, progressive or even centrists (moderates) beliefs obviously are not patriots and do not have the best interests of the country, community, state, etc., in mind. And this is hogwash.

I also get a considerable amount of emails from other conservative organizations. They insist that Democrats do not have best interests of the people in mind, and some even go so far as to say that Democrats flat out do not care about the well being of Americans... period.

This lends into the aforementioned use of the word Patriot. And throw this into the mix of Conservatives and their Tea Parties (more Revolutionary imagery, no matter how silly). What does this add into? The possibility of seeing those with less than conservative, and increasingly, far right conservative view points as enemies of the nation. And as well all very well know, we Conservatives love to cling to our guns and religion, this could lead to a dangerous concoction (See what you not praising the Lord and passing the ammo?).

But really. Democrats. Do you have only the interests of the special interests in mind? Do you actually hate America and want America to die a horrible death? Is the reason you voted for President Obama because he'd bring forth the next Soviet Union and everything that came along with it? Cooome on, tell the truth!

But I digress. Maybe this is a sinking ship, as some on DP have said. But this two party system requires involvement on one side or the other. So until the lifeboats have been lowered, I remain the spotter on the Crow's Nest, crying iceberg. We'll see what happens.

And it started with a German Battleship firing upon a Polish outpost as the beginning of the invasion of Poland.

It also seems the Russians are blaming Poland for the outbreak of the second World War.

Honestly.

After the Commies had signed a pact with the Nazis, it was Poland's fault. Apparently. Which is of course crazy talk.

But whatever. At least someone didn't forget about Poland.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090816/ap_on_go_pr_wh/us_health_care_overhaul

White House appears ready to drop 'public option'

WASHINGTON – Bowing to Republican pressure and an uneasy public, President Barack Obama's administration signaled Sunday it is ready to abandon the idea of giving Americans the option of government-run insurance as part of a new health care system.

Facing mounting opposition to the overhaul, administration officials left open the chance for a compromise with Republicans that would include health insurance cooperatives instead of a government-run plan. Such a concession probably would enrage Obama's liberal supporters but could deliver a much-needed victory on a top domestic priority opposed by GOP lawmakers.

Already?

That didn't take long.

Which is funny, considering the Dems have the filibuster proof majority. And they still can't push a public option? Really?

I wonder how the Administration is going to spin this to make it seem like their plan all along. It'll be interesting. Plus, the co-op idea sounds like the best reform plan I've seen so far.

So I'm in Saint Louis right now. And my grandfather? He is... he is illish. His spirits are a bit down.

So I was thinking what might be really nice is if any of you have ever wanted to find a WWII veteran to thank, I'd love to deliver messages to him.

I will screen all comments iffin' you want them to be private. I just need something to life his spirits and messages from people other than family always seem to help.

For those of you who do no know, he was a paratrooper in WWII, and fought from D-Day to Holland to Battle of the Bulge. And somehow managed to live.

Thanks!

Something I realized.

The reason villains twirl their mustaches is not because they are evil.

No!

They twirl their mustaches because they are using lower grade mustache wax, and need to twirl their mustaches in order to keep them twirled.

I have found this out through practice and use of mustache wax. If you use a lower grade mustache wax, your mustache will eventually untwirl itself. So you have you continuously twirl it throughout the day to maintain that curl. It's really not for effect, it's for absolute functionality.

I have yet to find a mustache wax that does not require consistent twirling throughout the day. But once I do, I shall be a happy man. And look, ironically enough, less villainous, because I shan't be twirling my mustache as often.

This has been a Public Service Announcement for the Committee to Look Less Evil.

(And maybe the Committee To RE-Elect the President...or (CREEP))

Really?

Am I the only one who thinks online voter registration is 1) stupid and 2) not going to change voter turnout?

From what I've read while on long and distant travels to the lands south of our border, Oregon is close to passing such a law.

I just think that if you can't find it to go to any greater number of places where voter registration cards are or feel you don't have the time to take the 2 minutes with a person registering voters perhaps you should maybe...not vote. I mean, you don't even have to leave your house to vote in Oregon. Technically, you don't even have to leave your house to register to vote already. You can already get your voter registration card from online, and just MAIL it in.

Shouldn't voting and registering take a bit more effort than the effort it already takes to be blissfully uninformed?

Ouch.

So, I saw The Limits of Control the other night and thought it was probably the most artistic films ever made and probably Jarmusch's best film.

But then I went and read the reviews. And holy shit, did the critics hate it.

It blew my mind.

The movie. It's like... it's art. Art at its finest.
